ABRAHAMS OYATJONED. PARIS. July 7. The 100 metres was the sensation of tlie day. Abrahams’ victory is the first success an Englishman has ever gained in that sprint at the Olympics. Abrahams equalled the world’s record. Thrice in tlie course of the race he was slightly behind. Porritt and Schulz led in the first half of the final, hut a super Hash sprint enabled Abrahams to overhaul them and come away, at about SO metres, to win hy four feet. There was an immense demonstration by all nations, wherein the Americans were conspicuous, which lasted ten minutes. When the Union Jack was hoisted, the National Anthem was sung the whole assemblage standing. Bowman was fourth, Paddock fifth, and .Murchison sixth. All in the final were English-speaking runner?. Porritt made a perfect start, hut lie was badly placed up to (10 metres, when dashing tin even with the held, and never letting down, lie made a beautiful finish, being only inches behind Schulz.
Interviewed, Porritt said:— “J never felt better. Sunday’s racing sharpened me up." The general opinion is that Carr did excellent!y. hut was not quite up to the class of the finalists.
