U.S.A. PRESIDENCY.
AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION. -Mt-ADOO LOSES VOTES. NEW YORK. July 7. The other aspirants declined to accept Mr AlcAdoo’s counter proposals, and the Democratic Convention opened on the twelfth day without apparently the slightest hope of reconciling the existing differences. The Smith and AlcAdoo proposals were then submitted to the Convention, and each was promptly defeated. The balloting, with its futile and unavailing results was then resumed. The weather was again hot, with the typical New York humidity. Aladdison Square Garden was nearly unbearable. The assemblage was listless, and clearly showed the physical strain. The 79th. ballot resulted: AlcAdoo 507 Smith 3GG Then tho Florida delegate leintroduced a former Smith proposal that all tho delegates he released from all their fledges, and their instructions. Curiously, this proposal was overwhelmingly adopted. A hope that this would have an immediate effect upon the balloting was groundless. The 3rd. ballot showed: AlcAdoo -118 Smith 3GB The Convention thereupon went into recess. NEW YORK. July 7. The action of the Democratic Convention in releasing all the delegates from any further obligation to any Particular candidate for the Presidency failed to bring tile immediate relief which iis sponsors had hoped, and after taking .six ballots, without result the Convention adjourned till tonight, The Slith. ballot gave the totals: AlcAdoo 1353 Smith 3GO Ralston 92 Glass 72 This was the first time that Governor Smith’s vote exceeded Air AlcAdoo and the populace cheeied loudly. AFTER B.7th. BALLOT. The S7t.li. ballot resulted: AlcAdoo 3GG Smith 301 Ralston 93
The New Mexico Delegation offered a resolution to be voted upon to-mor-row morning, namely, that in view of the fact that the representatives o' the candidates yesterday failed to solve difficulties, therefore, a miniature Convention composed of one representative from each State delegation, meet in Conference and attempt to determine the P residential and Vice-Presi-dential candidates. The Chairman (Senator Walsh) then asked the Convention to adjourn as a mark of sympathy at the death of President Coolidgc’s son until to-mor-row morning. Tho Convention did so.
RALSTON’S CHANCES. NEW YORK, July 7. After the recess, a report was circulated that there would lie a movement towards Air Ralston as a compromise candidate, and a further weakening of Air AlcAdoo, with a possible strengthening of Governor Smith. NEW YORK. July 8.
Before the adjournment till Tiiosd.v morning, the Coalition forces of the Democratic • Convention swept AlcAdoo votes to the lowest point. Smith leading for the first time. The adjournment was actually taken as a mark of sympathy with President and Airs Coolidge, at the death of their son. The smashing attack on Air AlcAdoo lines was accompanied hy gains to Ralston am 1 Glass. At the S7th. ballot, the last to-night. AlcAdoo fell below one third of power. During the day he lost Mississippi, Nebraska, and Nevada. Air Ralston now holds the best position of the fourteen minority candidates. SENATOR LA FOI.LETTE. NKAY YORK. July 7.
According to a telegram from Cleveland. the National Convention of the Socialist Party of America, have enlisted under Senator l.a Toilette's Presidential banner.
