Tin- Hitt man Shield match which took )il;ic«- on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon was an exceedingly fast and interesting Kamo, and the final scores are a good index as to tlie evenness of the Kanie. There was a large attendance of spectators. Mr Keenan had control of the game. Steel did not get much of the hall in the first spell. Imt when it came his way lie used his knowledge and experience to the host advantage and in the second spell brought off some good saves and his try was a beauty. Moynihan. although not getting ninny opportuniteis to lxi brilliant carried out ids part of the play exceptionally well. lie failed to collect the hall cleanly on two or three occasions hut this seemed to be due to over anxiousness on his pan. .Stevens was outclassed by Goodail. hut the experience ought to stand him in good stead. lie brought off some good saves at times and neatly always recovered when he failed to field cleanly. Coghlan never failed to get the hall away and was exceptionally good on defence and Reynolds had nothing oil him. Ilagar was at his host hut lie was just inclined to kick a little too hard on occasions. Bannister was a tower of strength to the sci uni, his experieln e also telling its tale, while Shannon and Kearns also worked well. Kayes and Cmmingliaiii were always on the hall with McKaney in close attendance, these last three doing some good tackling.
Richmond had nothing on Robertson and Griffiths got in some good "drk, tackling well. Freitas fielding and kicking was good, while McKay played his usual dashing game, although lie wa.s inclined to go solo which was mniecessnrr at times. All the Grey hacks with one exieutimt took the hall cleanly and on the whole had more polish than the Hokitika hacks. The Grey forwards worked well hut on the day the red alul blacks seemed to have an advantage. “Skragger" IVing's diihhling at times was a feature of the Grey forward's work and oil two occasions he brought the ball round and on very nicely. Greymoutli kicked oil' and went to the attack and when near Hokitika territory, Warners took a nice mark which lie converted with a good kick, within a few minutes of the coiiimem emeiit. .‘shortly after Hokitika got the hall down into Grey territory where a free kick was awarded. From line out Grey worked play up the field, but McKay stopped and Hokitika then set n rush going. Ilagar. Haves and Cunningham Icing prominent, with McEnaney, Shannon and Kearns in close attendance hut Ilagar again kicked a hit hard, Goodail sending the ball to midfield whore a hcrum ensued. Grey went at it again hut Stevens beautifully stopped this rush which was a very dangerous one. Stevens again had to stop another forward movement in which Bring got in some splendid dribbling. Stevens (fumbled but recovered quickly, sending the ball up the field, thus relieving a very awkward situation.. Coghlan wa.s the next to stop the Grey forward and throwing out to Robertson lie kicked out. A few moments after danger was again, threatening. A. Hokitika carried play hack again into Grey territory where they were awarded a free kick right in front of tlie posts, hut Greymoutli stopped it owing to Bannister’s mistake in not going back far enough. Grey carried play down into Hokitika territory again. Nelson nnd Jamieson getting marks. Darkness was nowsetting in obscuring the field of operations. hut the game ended shortly after without further seor«.

ers in the tricks of the game. Both teams were using their heads nnd did not miss many opportunities to gain an advantage. Some of the actions of the smaller players were very tricky and amusing and the spectators who witnessed the match thoroughly enjoyed it.
