Cabinet has granted a subsidy of pound for pound on the donation of £I,OOO made by Hon Sir Valter Buchanan. M.L.C., for the establishment of a. Chair of Agriculture at Victoria University College. Professor l’ercn was recently appointed to the Chair, n,s the first Professor of Agriculture at the College.
REFORM CANDIDATE. TK AWA M ITU. July 1. The selection of a Reform candidate for Waikato was made to-day at a conference of delegates representing all parts of the oleetnrito. Three candidates were presented to the conference, the (inn! selection lieing Mr I). Stewart Reid, Chairman of the Waipa County Counoil. FARMERS CONFER.. PALMERSTON, July 2. The Dairy Farmers Conference this morning reopened the debate on tho moratorium, the President accepting r. majority division on a motion to rescind the remit carried yesterday, that the moratorium he extended over live years, thereby providing for the gradual extinction and safeguards to avoid iiniiciessary hardship. As a result of the voting, the remit was rescinded. The Conference* decided to send a congratulatory telegram to Hon. Mcl/cnd on his elevation as a Minister. SOLICITOR STRUCK OFF. WELLINGTON. July 2. On the motion of the N.Z. Law Society, the Conn of Appeal made absolute the rule nisi striking Foster Allen Frederick Bone off the roll of soliyi tin's. Costs were [allowed to tho society. Mr Von Haust appeared in support of the motion.
MAN DIES THROUGH POISON
WELLINGTON, July 2
Francis Bailey, aged 53. a widower "as admitted to the hospital yesterday .suffering trom the effects of poison. He died shortly afterwards. De(leased resided a.t Petonc with his brother-in-law who found him in a had way. A doctor was summoned who ordered his removal to the Hospital. conciliation council sittings
WELLINGTON. July 2
The Coneiliation Council in connection with the Watersiders’ dispute, met this morning and adjourned to Auckland where proceedings will commence to-morrow. The Council will sit at Napier on tho oth., Dunedin on the lGtli., Greyniouth oil the 21st.. Christchurch on the 23rd. and Wellington on the 25th. MISTAKEN IDENTITY. AUCKLAND. July 2. On March 28th. a man known as Patrick Ryan was killed in a motor accident at Penrose. He was identified ami buried under that name, lull the police have since ascertained that the man’s name was Patrick Joseph Doherty. The inquest was re-opened today. and after hearing evidence, the Coroner said there was now no doubt of the deceased’s identity, and the deposition.- were amended accordingly. FINED £lO AND LICENSE ENDORSED. CHRISTCHURCH. July 2. The Magistrate this morning lined Thomas Aspell, licensee of the Eastern Hotel ten pounds for selling liquor after hours. The Magistrate endorsed the license, icliiarking that, it was a particularly had ease.
