VALEDICTORY.

On Monday evening' an invitation dance l and presentation was tendoied hy the Mental Hospital Stall' to Nurse Smith. The function was held in the staff (lining hall, which was prettily decorated hv the nurses—greenery, 'streamers and vari-coloiired electric lights intrigued the eye, and an avenue of palms illuminated with fairy lights extended from the “lobby” to the supjwr room, where midway through the evening an ela bo rate and dainty supper was served. Some forty couples graced the floor. .Air T. Stankov was M.C. and the excellent music was played by Nurse Maefarlane (piano) and Mr F. Martini (cornet), and Master Erie Huiue (guitar). Songs were eontributed by .Messrs Close uiul Moody. In the absence of the Medical Supt. Mr I*. F: Mulreunan, in presenting Nurse Smith with a dinner-service paid an earnest tribute to her efficiency as a mental nurse, and her’popularity as a fellow worker. AA’ithiu four years she had risen from the position of junior nurse to charge nurse—a record unequalled in mental nursing in New Zealand. As n fellow worker, her wish to serve, her quick sympathy and kindly nature, had endeared her to both attendants and nurses, who hoped that their modest present would serve as a token of their gratitude, goodwill, and goodwishes. Mr AT. Hnnrahan, on behalf of Nurse Smith replied in a.speech of brilliant brevity. Dancing continued until 1 ft.m. and the singing of Anld T«nng Syne terminated a memorable' evening.
