HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, JUNE 27tli. The Council met at 7.30 p .m. Pro sent Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), Coiilson, King. .lelfries, I’erham and Heinz.
When the minutes were being continued Mr .lelfries took exception to the minutes in reference to the paragraph referring to the purchase of chairs for the Council table, stating that the subject had been talked oirt in Committee and when the Council Wii, rising it was referred to hut no action was taken.
The Mayor said the Councillors had given nquiesrouoe to the proposal. The suggestion of Mr .Telllies was nnl lair to him, as there was no objection made at the time.
Mr Jeffries said lie objected lo the oust of L'-’S far new chair- for the Council table. -Mr Jeffries moved that the paragraph referring lo chairs he held over until there was a full Council nt next meeting.— Seconded by Mr Perlinm and carried. The minutes with this exception were D'eti agreed to and the outward correspondence approved. DEPUTATION. A deputation of butchers and others comprising Mes-rs Houston, Andrews, Lock, Staines. .James, Dicdriclis, and Atkinson waited on the Council in connection with the. resolution of the Council at la-t meeting forbidding (ho drafting of cattle at the abattoir yards.
Mr Houston stated that at a meeting of butchers held the previous evening it was resolved lo cuter a strong protest against the veto to prevent the drafting!)! cattle at the abattoirs. On a sale day it was found very difficult to drive small numbers of (-attic. D the butchers could not dealt the entile at the abattoirs then il would make a great amount of hardship lo the drovers. Lie thought the suggestion of the manager was impracticable. The cattle were dralted just inside the abattoir gale and turned into the big yard. If the resolution was carreid out if would ho impossible lo drive the necossarv cattle. The statement of the abattoir manager that the paddeoks were being cut up by the drafting was not (orreci.
MrV. •). Andrew, said they laid previously tried the proposal to cut the cattle into two mob,, but owing to the trnflie on the road it was impossible to keep them separate. The acees, at any time to the abattoir, wa, not satislaelory. Mr .lelfries asked il a drafting yard on the beach side of the abattoir paddocks would meet with the approval of the butchers.
Mr Andrews .said the suggestion would he an improvement though out oi the way.
The Mayor said the representations of the deputation would he considered later when there was a full meeting of the Council. He assured them that the -,\ i - he, of the butcher, would receive every consideration.
1 1 was resolved to refer the guest ion to the Finance Committee, the privilege ot cutting out not to be interfered with till the next meeting of the Council. - Air Houston, thanked the Coc.m il for the hearing given and the deputation withdrew.
The Abattoir Committee was authorised to make enquiries as to the proposed paddock ou the sea beach. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

Wellington. statin:; he was ol opinion that a revision of the Rornugh of llohitiha Win, not an urgent necessity and staling he was awaiting a reply as to whether the Council wits prepared to pay iln* cost of the valuation of South Hokitika.—Received : referred to Mayor and Town Clerk to report at next meeting.
.Mr .Jeffries said it would he to the advantage of the liorough il they paid (Sie whole cost of the valuation of the llnrowdi. It was tt seandalons attitude for the Valuer Ceneral to lake up that the lloroilgh should titty the whole <J the cost of the valuation. Il was l< years since, a valuation of the town had lieen carried out. Me moved that another protest lie made to the Valuer
General with the request that the valuation he carried out as requested. —Seconded by Mr Heinz, who said the spread of the town made it all the more necessary.
Mr Perhain said the Council should persist in their efforts to have the revaluation carried out.
The motion was agreed to. From S. Bassett, asking that the drain near his premises to he lowered to enable drainage to connect therewith. —Received and referred to Public Works Committee to attend to.

REPORTS
From Treasurer, reporting receipts CobM 3s, payments €287 12s (id, credit balance €-188 Ids Oil. Loan account credit balance ClObO 7s 2d.—Received. From Manager Abattoirs, reporting several of the butchers were continuing the practice of drafting cattle in the abattoir yards.— Received.
OVERSEER’S REPORT ON BRIDGES Davie Street Bridge.—fs in need ol immediate attention; the cap on one of the trestles is partly oil' allowing the bridge to -sag on one end, the stringers being long enough to overlap the cap arc holding the weight, being embedded in tbo bank. The bridge requires lifting oil one end. It has settled almost 12 inches and is unsafe for heavy traflic.
Stall'ord Street Bridge, near D. Stuart’s residence requires attention. Some of the hacking is decayed and requires renewing and watercourse cleaning out to allow a thorough in-
spection. The .small bridge on the hill near the racecourse requires redeeking with -1 inch timber, to carry heavy motor Ira Hie. the present covering being too light.' Park Street Bridge.—To make this bridge sale the span should he made shorter, or he supported hy n trestle in the centre; the stringers being silver pirn- are in fair condition, hut are too light to carry timber loaded motor lor* lios:. --Received, it was resolved lo have Davie Street bridge and bridge near racecourse altended to, the Overseer to report cost of concrete work for Stal-l-nil Street drain ami to temporarily strengthen Park Street bridge. Mr Heinz reported in regard to Mr ,1. Smith's complaint re overhanging trees that the neighbour's trees did not interfere with the complainant. Received.
The Mayor lot- Mr Evans moved:— That the Overseer prepare a report lor the information ol tho Council, detailin-' the length of the separate strode, roads, and footpaths constructed m the Borough.—Sec.aided hy Mr Coulson and carried. The Mavor for-Mr Evans moved:— That the Railway Department he asked to extend verandah protection at the Hokitika Station to cover the loading places used at each end for luggage, mails and parcels.—Seconded >»y Mr Coulson and carried. The Council rose at 5.30 p.m.
