VICTORIAN ELECTIONS.

Tl»-1»AY’> CONTESTS

VCBTUAMAN AND N.Z. CAULK ASSOCIATION. MELBOURNE, 'fhe Victorian State elections take place to-morrow. The result ol them has everyone guessing. The campaign throughout has been dull, public interest being lacking. Over 130 candidates arc contesting forty-live suets. There are twenty seats for which the members have been returned unopposed. Twelve of these arc retained by Labour, live by Nationalists (or the Liberals, ns they arc non known) and three bv the Country Party. There are four parlies in the field, viz—The Liberals who have stood by the Government: six Liberals who lane declined to follow the (lovcrumeiit. and who are being opposed by the Labourites and the Country Party. It is understood that Sir A. Peacock. who is leading the original Liberal wing will secure a working utnJoritv. A question is whether the Country Party who probably will hold the balance of power, will decide to give Labour a trial at ( bivornmciit in Victoria. A section of Ihe Country Party arc in favour of this. The Labour Movement. Hushed with the success of their cause in other States and in Britain, make what is considered to he an exaggerated claim, that they stand to secure a definite majority.

Some of tlio newspapers preili-t tl'iit there will lie little elianoo in tin* strength ot tiie Parties. Other papers ask the question: “’Will lailiour rule?"
