An important social function took place - this evening under the auspices of the Alanawatu A. and P. Association. when the Governor-General, Prime .Minister and other distinguished visitors were present. During the evening, in replying to a toast, Lord Jdlicoe intimated that he might not ho leaving the Dominion before the end of November, and lie said he hoped to remain to attend tho first Royal Show at Palmerston. He expressed regret at his impending departure from theso shores, declaring that the impression of tho New Zealanders would always be in the memory of Lady Jcllicoo and himself.
Air Massey also paid a tribute to the services of Lord Jellicoe, and proceeded to traverse the progress of tho country during the past twelve years, quoting figures showing the growing importance of primary production. Butter and cheese had increased to a wonderful extent, hut the flocks went down during the ■war. when tho farmers, through the slump, were forced to send stud flocks to the freezing works. They were now coining hack to normal f hough much yet remained to he done. AL* Alusse.v impressed upon his hearers tln* hardships of dairymen, declaring that in this industry every penny was earned. Other speakers were Messrs Bollard and Nnsworthy and Sir John Luke, all speaking on agricultural matters and the importance of^ Dominion primary and secondary industries.
