The dead body of Evelyn Thompson, a young domestic servant, employed at Hataitni, was found by a visitor to the residence. The employers were a way at the time. The visitor, on looking through the kitchen window, saw the deceased lying on the floor near an open gas stove. The visitor summoned aid. and an entry was effected. hut the servant was found to be dead.

The President of the Trades and Labour Council (.Mr J. Reid) .stated to-day that members of the Council unanimously favoured n State mono, poly of workers’ accident insurance. I nder State monopoly, there was nn doubt that (Jumper premiums would rule owing to the fact that their would be less overhead charges that’ under the present system when private companies were competing for the trade. It wit. also held that the trouble which sometimes arose at present with regard to workers securing compensation would not lie so likely to arise if the State had a monopoly of the business. It had boon unanimously agreed by the Cnaneil that the general question of the Compensation for Accident Act should he referred to the Parliamentary committee of Trades Council. The Federation Committee would go into the whole matter.
