Shortly before 11 p.m. a lire broke out in the old wooden premises oeettpied by ft. Brien, eoaeli and motor trimmer, in Stuart Street, opposite St Haul's Cathedral, the Hatties bursting through the front and roof and endangering an adjoining Chinese laundry when the City Brigade arrived. A largo E-sex motor-car. owned by Air IJrien, was destroyed. Air Brien and an assistant were working under the ear when they dropped a nut and lighted a match to look lor it. Ine pencil in the carburettor ignited. Brien and the as.-isinut escaped before the petrol lank exploded. The ear was speedily dc-ureyed. and the flame-, spread. The wall.- and root of the building which was vc rv old blazed very fiercely, and the place '.as practically destroyed. I he building was owned by Air.- Sleii-hott.-e, and it is believed to have been insured in the National Office, but tile amount wa, not available to-night. The ear. owned by Brien. was insured for £350 in the Tiisurai'.ce Office of Australia, and the contents were insured for £195 in the Southern Union Office. A fire occurred on tlm .same premises about three months ago, when the interior was badjy damaged, hut no great ‘tructural damage was done.
