John Rattray Dunlop and Arthur Swain appeared on a charge ol entering a Harbour Board shed and stealing cash and whisky valued at £lln. A charge of receiving was also preferred. After four und a halt hours, the jury disagreed. AYith the exception of Atiller toe accused all made written .statements, admitting certain connections with the affairs, hut the statements did not agree, one with the other, c contained no admission as to participating in an actual t'nelt. 1 lie whisky was taken to Alceanee and buried there and three of the accused admitted taking part in these operations. A new trial was ordered for next session. GRASS FILLS CASK. CTIRISTCHFRCH. June 13. During the heating of a grass fire ease this morning. Counsel for the defendant made n strong protest against the publication of a headline in the "Sun" newspaper to the effect that large areas had been devastated. Ihe ease for the defence is that the hind has been improved as the result of the tire. Counsel said he was considering whether the Editor should be brought to Colli t for contempt. The Judge said it was most improper for anyone to come to anv conclusion before a ease had reached finality.
