\ decidedly interesting development i„ connect ion with automobilism. is reported from Berlin. Germany, where ;l Mercedes chassis has been I mining on crude nil. with an engine of the Diesel or semi-Diesel type. A compressor is fitted to the engine, wide' Ml, ..lies the necessary compresed air. and the induction is under pressure. No magneto or sparking-plug ' s used in this engine, thus cluing away with a small hut important item that sometimes gives trouble. A Jo h.fi. engine in a standard 2-ton (basis with an omnibus body was tested, and it was found that with crude oil tool it gave at least equal power to that developed by the petrol engine as we understand it. Further, it is noteworthy to add that tlie vehicle, with its heavy oil Jiovor unit, covered a considerable distance over bad roads at a speed of b 0 kilometres (approximately 38 miles) per hour. This vehicle wots fitted with an elect tic starter, to which it responded promptlv. Crude oil costs only a quarter of the pri 1 otrol. but, 1n addition to that economy, there was .shown a saving of 27, per cent in tho amount ol iuel consumed.
