At Michigan City, Carpentier and Gibbons were greeted by uproarious applause hy an immense crowd. Carpentier’s weight was announced as 17-1 lbs and Gibbons’ as 1771b5.
A telegram from Dempsey challenging the winner was read. In tlic first round Cnrpentier shot heavy rights to the head and drove to the body in a clinch and swung a right to tlie chin. The men were boxing cautiously. Gibbons left-hooked to the chin and chased Carpentier around tlie ring.
In round two, Gibbons feinted and forced Carpentier to retreat. Carpentier missed with his left and Gibbons pounded his body in tho clinches. Gibbons drove Carpentier into the corner and Carpentier smashed his left to tho face and weired two left hooks to the chin. He danced away from Gibbons’ rights and lefts. In round three Gibbons missed with his left and Carpentier landed flush on the j aw with his right. Gibbons sent hi- right to the chin and Carpentier ran into his corner. Gibbons, pursuing landed a left, and Carpentier left hooked to the stomach.
In round four tlie lighters clinched. Carpentier hacked away but suddenly lashed out to tlie chin. Gibbons hacked Carpentier into a corner and punished him on the head and hotly. Car. pentier dropped a left to tho face and received two lefts on the chin. Tn return Carpentier landed a left on the chin, Gibbons dodging a right swing. Gibbons landed two lofts to the jaw and Carpentier missed a right to the jaw. In .round five Cai pentier began retreating and Gibbons hooked a left to the head.
Gibbons drove Carpentier into a corner in the. sixth round, landing body punches. Gihlions landed two lefts to the head and a right to the ribs. The lighters exchanged body blows in the clinches. In the seventh round Gibbons rocked Cnrpentior’s head with two left uppercuts and whipped over u right to the head, forcing his opponent to hang on. Gibbons drove Carpentier into the corner with a right to the body. Gibbons landed three rights to the head making Carpentier groggy, Carpentier hanging on at the hell. In round eight they clinched. Carpentier hanging on and punching the body. Gibbons sent- a left to the head and drove two lefts to the body, a right- to the stomach and another to the stomach as he hacked away. Carpentier hooked a savage right io the head. In the eighth round Georges sent over a light left. Gibbons clinched and they exchanged rigths to the body. Carpentier sent / two rights to the face and then fell to the floor, indicating he had hurt his ankle. Carpentier limped round and Gihlions drove two rights to tlie hotly and they clinched. Gibbons landed live rights to the body. Carpentier hanging on. Carpentier was groggy, hut lashed out two lights which missed. Gilliams laughing. lii the tenth round Curpontior retreated to the ropes and Gibbons fell, lie hooked a left to the body. Carpent ier clinched and was noticeably limping. Gibbons hooked a :left to the chin and cut Curpontior over the eye. Carpeiitier hacked and Gibbons punched him with rights and lefts to the head. Carpeiitier missed a right and left to the body. Carpeiitier bleeding and fast tiling, fell into a clinch just before the end of the bout. Gibbons trying to shake Carpeiitier off for a finishing punch.
THK FIGHTERS’ OPINION'S. NFAY YOKE. May 111. Gilihons, though disappointed at liis failure to secure a knock-out, expressed satisfaction at the ease with which he defeated Carpeiitier and asserted that if 1 lie Frenchman had fought like fie battled against Dempsey.
