WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27th. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. The annual meeting for the election of Chairman of Westland County Council look place at noon. Present: — Hon J. Griinmond, Messrs J. A. Murdoch,'T. W. Duff. W. .Searle, M. Keenan, B. Ward, \Y. J. Jeffries, E. A. Wells and T. It. Chesterinnn. Tho Chairman (Mr Duff.i thanked members for the very kind and courteous manner in which they had supported him during the past year. It had been a somewhat strenuous year. The Exhibition had boon curried through ami though their executive officer had taken a great part in that work. the office work had been carried on without the slightest hitch. 'J he Council had a very capable staff including thcirßoiu! Overseer who was doing 'pleinlid work. The whole ol the lead stall' was giving general satisfaction. During the year an unlortunute thiotl had washed away the Kakapnlahi bridge hut he hoped it would soon he reconstructed, lie thanked them heartily for their support during his term of office. MR E. A. WELLS ELECTED.

The Clerk Jlr Evan-; took the chair and invited nominations for the position of Chairman for the ensuing vear.

Mr Chestormaii nominated Mr Wells; Seconded hv .Mr Jelfries.

Messrs Chestermau, Ward and Murdoch declined nomination. There wore no further nominations.

.Mr E. A. Wells was therefore declared County Chairman for the ensuing year on a unanimous vote. Mr Wells took the chair and expressed his appreciation ol the confidence of members. He assured them he would do his utmost to advance the best interests of the County ami trusted lie would receive that support from members that had been given to his predecessor. He thanked them for the confidence reposed in him. Mr Murdoch congratulated Mr Wells on his election by the unanimous vote of members. He promised to give every support to tlie ( hairmnii in the carrying out of his duties. Hon J. Griinmond emloh'cd the good wishes and felt that the Chairman would prove capable and efficient in hU duties. Mr Chestermau congratulated the Chairman on his election and asstited them he would give every possible support in the carrying out of the duties of his office. Mr >searle in congratulating the Chairman extended an invitation to him to make a trip to South Westland as early as possible. Mr Ward endorsed the previous remarks and specially congratulated him on his election unanimously. He felt sure lie would he able to capably picside over the proceedings of the Council. The coming year promised to he a strenuous one and lie would give every support. In the County Clerk the Chairman would have a tower ot strength to assist him in carrying out his duties. Mr Keenan joined in the genera congratulations as did Mr Duff. Mr Duff then moved that a very hearty vote of thanks bo accorded to the County Clerk for tlie very able support given during the past Y oar - Mr Jeffries joined in congratulations to Mr Wells. He felt the coming year would he a strenuous year. He promised every support in the carrying

out of tlu? duties of tile chair. He also seconded the motion of thunks to Mr Evans. This was carried by acclamation. Mr Evans thanked mc-nibers for the vote and assured them he was at all times pleased to do li is utmost to further the best interests of the Council. Mr Evans also mentioned that tenders were being invited in New Zealand and England for the erection of Waiho river bridge. The Chairman heartily thanked members for the very generous references made to his past services, and trusted he would lie able to successfully carry out the duties. The Chairman then moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring C hairman (Mr Dull) for his pasl services. Seconded by Mr Searle and carried. Mr Dull' briefly acknowledges! the vote.
