AMERICAN ITEMS.

[Reuters Telegrams.] U.S.A. PRESIDENCY. WASHINGTON. May 20. Out of the total of 109 S delegates to attend the Democratic Party’s National Convention on June 2-1, at Now York, there are 800 already elected. Of j these 207 are pledged to vote for Air AfcAdoo as the Party’s Presidential nominee, and 123 to vote for Governor Smith of New York, while 2-1 arc for Senator Underwood. So far 542 are not pledged. There remain 202 delegates yet to ho chosen. A -majority of two thirds is required to select the candidate. Tims, while President Coolidge is certain to he the Republican choice, the Democratic choice remains extremely uncertain, and in view of the large number of unpledged delegates, it is is believed that the so-called dnrk__ horse, or a compromise aspirant, will secure the Democratic nomination. The prominent candidates doubtlessly w ill be deserted after the early balloting. There is it light for liberal prohibition and for anti-Ku Klux Ivlan planks. It is believed they will engender extreme bitterness, whereby Governor Smith. Mr McAdoo and Senator Underwood are likely tn suffer elimination. The National League of Women Voters has announced a request to lioth the Republican and Democratic Parties to include planks in their platform for American participation in the World Court, the prompt enactment of Federal laws for the protection of children in industry, the removal of legal discrimination against women and support of the merit system as tho basis of appointment to public office, and to promotions.
