MAIN HIGHWAYS SCHEME

I Ef{MAX EXT HOAD WORK. HAWKE’S BAY PROPOSAL. WELLINGTON, .May 19. For the cai lying out of permanent roadwork under the main high wry. l ; scheme, the Hawke's Bay County Council is making the necessary preparations so that at tbc right time they c.m move straight ahead without any further delay. On Afonday the matter was discussed at a meeting of that body, and as n. result of their diseussion it was decided to make application to the A(a in Highways Board for a subsidy towards the construction of ten miles of permanent roads.

ATr T. .Mason Chambers, chairman, stated that the council proposed io lay down ten miles of surfaced road this year nf a cost of from £20,900 to £20.0C0, half of which would he contributed by the Government. The question that next arose was the method of construction. It was proposed to do a test piece of concrete rirul, about a mile in length, but it would be out of the question to do the whole of tfie ten miles in concrete. Concrete. he said, had not yet been found out to be the best, and be had been inlormcd by the Public Works engineer that he thought that the Highways Board would oppose the laying down of concrete roads on a large scale until they were*proved to be the best. IJe moved: “(1) That application be made to the Main Highways Board for a subsidy to construct ten miles of road. (2) That one ini'e should !e concrete construction. 18 feet wide, at an estimated cost of £-luofl, and that the balance of nine miles should Jre 24 feet wide, and constructed with bituinastif macadam by whar is known as the penetration method, recording to specification* prepared by the council." This was seconded by Air F. B. Logan and carried.
