RECORD FLOODS. THAMES. May 17. A heavy easterly gale was experienced here during last night, causing tho Knueinnga River to rise rapidly. It overllowed into the residential area at Parawni, and brought down a lot of kauri logs. Either those or a metal punt which broke loose, fouled the main traflie hi idee and carried tho middle span away. The metal punt then fouled a new bridge in course of erection, breaking it in halves, one half of which jammed against the railway bridge, which is now threatened by weight of water. No trains have to-day arrived or departed. The racecourse is a sett of water. Two "valuable punts, and fishing launches have been swept to sea and sunk. Old residents state that it is the biggest flood in the liistorv • the river Thames. The town is isolated from tho districts to the southward.
MANY SHIPS DELAYED. AUCKLAND, May 17
A severe easterly gale, accompanied by rough seas, was blowing on the East Coast yesterday. Tiie steamer Karori bound from 'Westport to Auckland, was reported to be steaming yesterday against a gale, between Capo Maria and Capo Brett, and was making very little headway. The vessel was bringing hunker coal for 11.M.A.5. Adelaide. It is doubtful if tho warship will he able to leave Auckland with the fleet. The liner Dorset, eu route from Liverpool w ith 280 third class passengers had been expected to arrive on Monday. She has now wirelessed: “Hope to arrive on Tuesday. Weather very had.” The City of Adelaide, from New York, lias sent a wireless as follows: —“Delayed by a storm. Hope to tench Auckland by Tuesday morning.” The steamer Wairuna. on her way here from San Eraaci'io was due at Wellington en Wednesday.
