ESSAY COMPETITION
VISIT TO THK HOKITIKA HAS WORKS.
Recently a party of senior pupils from lhe Convent School under the direction ot one of the Sisters paid an observation visit to the Hokitika Has Works. The party was received by the Works Manager (.Mr 0. Heinz) who showed the pupils over tlie Works, explained ihc machinery am! plant and its ,unctions and gave some details of the manufacture of gas. On the return to .School the pupils wrote eoiilietitivo es«nys on the visit and what had been -ecu and gleaned, lhe essays were examined in lhe first instance by the Sister accompanying the party, and two essays were selected and forwarded to .Mr Heinz for perusal and comment. Mr Heinz judged the c—savs in the following order:
First: Kathleen Kennedy. The work is not as solid as the second competitor, but her observation of detail is better the main object of the visit. 03 marks awarded. Second: Mary Kerridge lets done solid work, but lacks detailed information. The chemistry is good. 93 marks awarded. It is hoped to publish the essays for General information. A copy of '‘The Romance of Westland” has been handed to the writers of the essays with the compliments of the Hokitika Gas Cov.
