In an entertainment sneli a s that to be presented to-night hv the Eng-li'-h 11um1 1 y Bishop Company, it is difficult to say that any item is more l outstanding than another, the aim of Mr Bishop being to present a programme which shall have it. universal appeal, and in which there must he such ;t choice of numbers of it consistently high stundai'i) that no patron ■shall go away without hearing or seeing something to his or her taste. One of th<> foremost items in this entertainment is the original ragtime qttartet. comprised of Harry Avondale. Maurice Jnffey. Walter Kingsley, and Robert Roberts. Nightly these four are said to he responsible for fifteen minutes’ delightful and at times ttploari.ous fan. Commencing quietly with a harmonised number, each succeeding item is varied and it is said to lie given with such originality and vim that after three songs have been given the audience is clamouring for more. Alter thi' fourth and inevitable fifth numbers have been disposed of. the whole house, it is stated is invariably in an uproar, so that a sixth number follows. This is the finale for the ragtime quartet, as a ride, though it i> on record that on occasion there have been no fewer tlian eight before the four have been allowed to mahe their final bow for the night. A musical interlude by Mr Walter Kingsley and Miss l.alie "Whyte is another outstanding attraction, the curtain rises with Miss Whyte at the piano, to whose accompaniment Air Kingsley sings. Mis* Whyte then sings to Mr Kingsley’s accompaniment. after which the two singers give one of their duets to the accomiianiment of the orchestra. This interlude is regarded as one of the gems of the evening. Popular prices are ndverti-ed. The box plan is now tilling fast at .Mclntosh's.
