RAILWAY REVENUE.

QUARTER MILLION INCREASE [by TEJ.EGRAPII TER TRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May 5. Holt J. G. Coates, Minister of Railways, communicated the following information to the Press in regard to the railway accounts for the year ending 31st. March, 1924. Notwithstanding the fact that severe Hoods and interruptions of tratlie occurred in the early part of the year, the revenue has not only been well maintained, hut it has shown an increase of C23G.409 over the revenue for the preceding year, while during the same period the expenditure has been reduced by the sum of C 05.731. The net return of expenditure over expenditure lor the year ended 31st. March 1921 amounts to £1,380.143 as against a sum of £1,223.303 for the previous year. The rate of interest that the Government expects the railways to return is 3J per cent, ft will be seen therefore, that the rate earned by the Department is slightly in excess of {hat rate. Passengers show a decrease of 420.000. Goods tonnage shows an increase of 000.000 tons, while the train mileage has increased to the extent ot (iiR.OO9 train mile*.
