GUMDIGGERS’ BODY FOUND. DARGAVILLE, May 5. The body of an old age pensioner, Charles Carlson, a gum digger, found by a lad shooting on Sunday near Maitahi. Deceased, who had been on the gumlields for over twenty years, went away about Christmas time. No notice was taken of his departure, as ho often went away. The hotly was in an advanced state of decomposition. There were no marks of violence. The Coroner brought in a verdict of found dead from exposure. FATALITY FEARED. NELSON, May 0. Information has been received from tliei Sounds to the effect that a motor launch left Okolia Bay for TikirangL Bay on Sunday afternoon, and lias not been heard of since, and a fatality i.s feared. The launch contained Wilfred Wells, his wife and child, diaries Petlev, his wife and child. A strong south easterly has been raging in the Sounds since Sunday. NAVAL VISIT. GORE. May (i. ; Three ollicers and 110 men from the Dauntless visited Goto .to-day, and were welcomed by tho Mayor, and entertained by the citizens. Later they were taken on a tour of the country districts by the Member for the district. Tho men return this evening. THE PUBLIC’ FINANCES. LABOUR MEMBERS’ REQUEST. C'lll {rSTC 1 lIIRCIT, May 0. The Canterbury l-ibour Members of Parliament have sent a letter to Mr Massey claiming that the public should he told at Ihe earliest opportunity the exact position in .connection with the public finances, and calling attention to the fact Hint Mr Philip Snowden (British Chancellor of the Exchequer) last month presented an eight hundred million budget and a. surplus for the year ending Match and that while the revenue and expenditure figures wore available in England for April, the New Zealand Statistician was prevented publishing the .January, February and March figures until the Finance Minister chooses to declare a surplus for the year. They declare that there is likely to he a three million surplus, and they urge that two millions should lie paid to the public servants to restore the pre-war standard of wages.
