SERIOUS CHARGES

WELLINGTON, April 30. Julia Ruddlesdcn. a, married woman, and Fredeirck Raynei: Pinny, a building contractor, were charged together in thi> Magistrate's Court to-day. The former was eharged with using an unlawful instrument with intent to procure abortion, and the hitter with procuring Ruddlesdcn to commit abortion. The Chief Detective stated that the principal charge would he against Pinny. The girl was not out of danger and. he asked for an adjournment for a week.

Counsel for amused asked for reasonable hail. The female accused was married, with two children, and her condition was such that it was inadvisable for her to have to remain in gaol until the Supreme Court trial some three months hence. The. male accused had several contracts in hand, which it was desirable slmuld he cleared up by the time of the trial. The Magistrate granted hail to the accused in £3OO and one surety of a similar amount, or two of .CloO each.

HATCH OF IMMIGRANTS. AYELUNGTON. April 30. The liner Arawa. which arrived this morning from Home, brought 2JO immigrants. including 33 domestics. Six students of the Auckland Training College pleaded guilty in the Uolice Court to charges of forgery' in connection with the examination for the Teachers’ T). Certificate, in November Inst, when the students impersonated others and wrote the answers to certain papers. The Piincipal of the Training College gave evidence that the writing on the papers produced was not in the hand of the student whose number appealed on the top. All the accused subsequently con tossed and were suspended. No doubt the students had been severely punished. |,ut lie considered, by their notion, they had placed themselves outside the teaching profession. All were commit ted for sentence on hail of £3.
