Tlie death took place last evening at Christchurch after a brief illness of Mrs Bussell, wife of the Hon. G. W. Bussol. Deceased was a sister of Mr .Tames Parle, Crown Prosecutor of Hokitika, and was woll-knoun here. Mrs Parkleft yesterday >or Christchurch. The many friends of the bereaved will extend their deep sympathy in their bereavement.

At tlie request of tlie chopping men the Hokitika Cycling Club are arranging for a 10-inch log underhand chopping ion tost on Saturday week. The logs arc already to hand, having been procured for the cancelled spin t s meeting. .Considerable interest is being shown in the contest, and - a good entry is looked for. The contest will he chopped in heats, and will take place in the Kiwi training shed on Gibson Quay.
Among tl'.e passengers who arrived in Chris! church from the West Coast on Sunday evening were the members of the Methodist Young Women s Bible Class Cninn who bad been attending blaster camp at Hokitika, says the “Lyttelton Times.” Tt was not until they reached the station oil their way home that the news of the strike reached them. Adjourning to the Methodist Schoolroom, the party then camped until tile first opportunity occurred to travel. On Saturday morning a start was made. Just before reaching - Arthur’s Pass, at McGrath’s Creek, a washout was discovered, however, which necessitated a return over the Gorge. On Sunday morning, in glorious sunshine, the inurncy was resumed once more. __ At the too of the Pass snow was falling. The Waimakariri was reached about J p.m.. where the various passengers and luggage were transferred across liv means of a. horse. Tlxpress ears from Christchurch awaited them . the last of which arrived jn the city about 11 p.m.

In consequence of the resumption of the running of the trains, the Rcefton Jockey Club have decided to hold theip Autumn Meeting on the Rcefton Racecourse next Wednesday, May 7. There will be convenient train arrangements. Luncheon and Afternoon Tea obtainable on the ground. Handicaps will he declared on Saturday at 10 p.m.. and acceptances close on Monday at 8 p.m.
The local train services, which were renewed on Wednesday afternoon, were continued yesterday under the timetable prevailing before the strike. The only incident of interest was that tlie morning train from Grey, mouth van into Hokitika station right on schedule time, a happening that was worthy of speieal notice. ’I he inward train in the evening however, made up for the morning lapse, as it was about three-quarters of an hour late of the scheduled time for arriving.

There was excellent patronage at tlie* Soldiers’ Club euelire last niglit. and several very enjoyable games were played. The prim ipal lady’s prize was won by Mrs llrowne and the consolation by Mrs Brookes. .Mr W. Lloyd won the gent's prize fan umbrella donated by Mr Scott) and .Mr Scott won the consolation prize. The ladies’ eummittee supplied supper. The dance which followed was greatly enjoyed. Music was supplied bv Miss Piiscoo and Mr Ilonetti, ami Mr 11. A. Thompson was M.C. Alter'd her it was a very pleasant evening. Next Thursday night the big tournament begins.
