WESTLAND RACING CLUB

As the afternoon wore on the attendance increased and with a bright suit the afternoon proved a very pleasant one. The starting of Mr Rutland was of an excellent quality, the fields - »-N iu every case being let away promptly and in good line, right on timetable. Hie racing was good and there were some splendid finishes, while the di\ldeiids were of a substantial nature, hardy a favourite getting home. Tho various officials had matters in capital order, and the afternoon passed off without a hitch, right on schedule time. The sky clouded after 5 o’clock and just as the last race started a light shower fell. The attendance under the special .circumstances of the i railway strike was very satisfactory, as every available motor-cav was utilised to bring patrons, and with the train. ,/ service originally arranged the meeting ciuild easily have assumed record proportions. As it was many of the visitors motored directly to the course and from there straight back homo. Tho Town Band was present and supplied a capital programme. It was noticeable that there was a large reduction in the number of the fair sex present, for which the traffic arrangements were responsible. The gate receipts were highly satisfactory, being within £6 of the previous Easter. Speculation was not as brisk as usual. Air Lynch and his staff handled £5,821 for tho day as against £8613 last year. There was one unfortunate occurrence during the afternoon that resulted in the death of Straysliot owned by Air Geo. Adamson. The horse was leading in the hurdle race and when approaching the hurdle after coining out of the cutting the first time round was seen to falter, and it did not rise to the hurdle, crashing over it and breaking its neck, death being almost instantaneous. Iho rider, F. Cann, was thrown clear, but was unconscious, when picked up, but on being brought in by the ambulance soon came to and appeared to he uninjured though suffering somewhat from shock and bruises.
