The funeral of the late Mrs AY. .Mills of Humphreys took place on Thursday morning and was followed by a large number of mourners. The Kev A. C. Purchas conducted the service at the graveside. A number of ('.oral tributes were placed on the grave.
At a meeting of the Finance Committee of the Borough Council it was resolved to write to the Hospital Board asking that the proposed levy he reviewed, with the object of making a reduction in the amount of the levy in accordance with representations to be made in the letter being sent on behalf of the Council.
The motor service to Christchurch was running yesterday and was well patronised, a number of passengers getting through in good time. The service is also running to-day. The ear services to Greymoutli are being well patronised. The hour of departure is being observed punctually.
It has been decided to hold the autumn meeting of the Recfton Jockey Club on the Greymoutli racecourse on Wednesday next, instead of at Reefton. This arrangement has boon necessary owing to transputt difficulties affecting the horses engaged at the meeting. There will be, therefore, jnccs at Greynunith on .Monday and Wedncsdav.
I nofficial lcports from outside in regard to the duration of tho railway strike are rather pessimistic a.s to the resumption of running again. It is believed in several qmuters the strike will last ill least a. month, but long before thou owing to the shortage of supplies and general congestion, many thousands of employed will ho thrown out of work, and the country will suffer accordingly.
There was a very fair attendance at the ouriirc party at the Soldiers’ Hall on Thursday night, with a e:owded attendance for the dance which followed. The winners of the prizes at tho euchre Mere Miss Dobson (pair lady’s siloes) and Miss McGnigan (consolation!; Mr J. Mclntyre (pair gent’s shoes), and Mr G. I.akin (consolation). Aliss Pns. coc and Mr Bonetti supplied tlic music for the dance. The ladies committee supplied supper. Altogether a very enjoyable evening was passed.
The building fund campaign for the R.S.A. Club rooms will open on Thursday next (May Day) with a monster ouche party. The euchre tournament for the season opens the following Thursday. Ladies are invited to help prepare for the Empire Bazaar which will run for about a week opening on Monday. June 30th. It is intended to make this event the function of the year. Many friends throughout the district will hear with sincere regret of the death of Mrs Learmont of Kanieri. which took place on Thursday afternoon alter a short illness. Deceased was one of the most respected of citizens and had won a large circle of friends during her long residence at Kanieri, being noted for her kindly actions and generosity. Deceased was a native of County Armagh, Ireland and 72 years of age. Deceased lost her husband many years ago. She leaves a family of two daughters (.Mrs A. W. Varrall.* of Hokitika, and Miss Dcnia Learmont of Kanieri), and one son (Mr Tom Learmont of Reefton). To them will he extended the deep sympathy of the community at the passing of a sterling honored resident. The funeral is taking place this afternoon.
