MAD IMMIGRANTS.
NEW YORK, April 22. Doctor Speiiccr Hawes, of the State Hospital Commission, addressing a convenl/ion ‘of VI horapists, made a charge that insufficient medical examiners and assistants due to the insufficient appropriation" by Congress, lias resulted in tlie entrance annually of many thousands of insane or mentally deficient immigrants through EllK Island. Tlie doctor asserted the situation had reached such a shocking extent tlnii immediate medical measures were absolutely essential. New York State, yhich bears the burden of the incoming immigrants at Ellis Ims 41.00 D insane persons lodged in it:; State institutions built to i-ceont-niodate thirty-eight thousand, quarter of the inmates arc aliens. Dr Dawes said that the medical examiners pass upon eight immigrants per minute which is absolutely 'iisu-Ticien! time to determine many serious ailments., notably mental weaknesse. The United States Labour Department, moreover, in 1922, admitted .1203 immigrants under bonds, after the doctors ordered deportation. Dr .Dawes predicted segregation will he the only solution if the medically regulated admittances continue. Other wise Now York State will ho oicirun by .Morons and their offspring.
NEWFOUNDLAND ARRESTS. NEWFOUNDLAND, April 22. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of Sir Richard Squires, former Premier: and Doctor Alexander Carapbel, former Aiinister of Agriculture; and J. T. Afeaney, a former Controller. The action of the Aiinister of Justice follows the findings of Commissioner Walker. Campbell was adjudged guilty of using public funds for personal expenses, rnd Squires and Afeaney were declared to have misappropriated funds from tho Controller’s Department.
