, [ilY TELEGRAPH—PER MESS ASSOCIATION.] A SYDNEY 'TRAGEDY. MAN KILLS SON-IN-LAW. SYDNEY, April 21. William Batson, aged seventy-four, fatally shot his son-in-law, George Hawkins, aged fifty-one, with a revolver and then shot himself at their residence, North Sydney. Mrs Hawkins, who is a step-daugh-ter of Datson, informed the police that she wiis in a. downstairs loom with her husband when he went upstairs, to get a pipe. He met Batson who was highly excited, and holding a revolver on the stairs. He suddenly fired shooting Hawkins in the heart, killing him instantly. Airs Hawkins rushed into the street to secure assistance. When she returned, Datson was on the balcony waving a revolver. 'fine police were then sent for, and on their arrival, Datson refused to put his hands up. The police fired a shot, entered the house, and vent to his room. He refused to open tho door. The police fired another shot, then hearing a shot from within, forced the dor, and found Datson on tho floor wounded in the arm and mouth. He has been in a bad state of health for some time. He was sent to tlie hospital in a serious condition. LADY RIDER, SERIOUSLY INJURED. SYDNEY, April 22. Miss Vera MacMillan, a N.Z. rider contestant in the Bond Hosiery Ladies Hunting event at the Show met with a had accident. When riding the horse Snowstorm she was thrown at the sod wall, and the horse fell upon her. She was removed to the hospital where she is reported to he in a serious condition with spinal injuries. YEARLING SALES. -SYDNEY, April 22. At the yearling sales a BardolphSnowflower gelding brought 850 guineas. H. Telford (N.Z.) paid seventy guineas for a Tresnsdy-Charlene colt. SYDNEY, April 22. At tlie yearling sales, seven Valais’s progeny brought a total of 10,250 guineas. Three colts brought respectively two thousand, thirteen hundred and fourteen hundred, while the fillies brought nine hundred, twelve hundred and fifty and two each, seven hundred. The New Zealander, W. J. Wilson, secured a Ciceroi-Elsie Hart colt for 210 and AY. T. Jamieson secured a Demos-thenes-Dragon Queen colt for 450 nod a Demosthenes-Douxverrc filly 120 guineas.
