£IO,OOO CONTRACT GOES ABROAD.
LONDON. February 2]. Bradford Corporation Electricity Committee have let a contract for four motor-converters to a Belgian firm whose tender was £10,500, compared with the lowest British price of £14,500. All British firms manufacturing mo-tor-eonverers tendered and quotations were received from Belgium. Switzerland, and Sweden, all foreign tenders being lower than the lowest British quotation. The committee was negotiating for four months to secure reductions so that the tender could he given to a British firm. The committee’s only hope of lower electricity charges is in purchasing cheaper plant, and keeping down capital exenditure. Mr 6. R. 0. Carter, a member of the Electricity Committee and secretary of the Bradford District Amalgamated Engineers’ Union, referring to an allegation that British firms were trying to exploit municipalities by demanding exorbitant charges, said in his view there should be a Government inquiry into conditioiTs in tho engineering industry.
