BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. A FREE FIGHT. NAPIER,. April 12. An unfortunate Rugby incident in a junior match at Petane, led to a free fight. The Petane team were chiefly composed of -Maoris, who indulged in a good deal of rough play, and one was ordered off. After the match, this man assisted by spectators, made for a member of the opposing team, the High •School Old Boys. The members of the latter team had to fight to defend themselves, until onlookers were able to put a stop to the fracas. CHARGE AGAINST CLERIC. AUCKLAND, April 14. At the Polico Court, Alexander Linton, aged 42, clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank, Auckland, was charged with forging a withdrawal slip in the name of Edward Knowles, and obtaining £l9O thereby. The evidence showed that a hook had been left by a depositor for the interest to be made out. A withdrawal slip for £l9 was presented by somcoue unknown to the paying clerk. The evidence showed a similarity between the slip and accused's writing. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. OFF HOME. OAMARU, April 15. Robert Alilligun (Chairman of Oaimi'Mi Harbour Board for 15 years) in view of an extended trip to the Old Countrv, resigned and was tendered a complimentary banquet after to-day’s meeting.
PROMINENT SOCCER ITU’S DEATH WELLINGTON, April 15. Obituary:—C .F. Fordliam, aged 51, Chairman of the Football Association (soccer) Executive, formerly a R ugky player. He was very prominent of late in soccer circles, especially as a coach and referee. CROSSING KEEPER DIES OF INJURIES. CHRISTCHURCH, April 15. William Cat tee, a middle aged railway crossing keeper at Lyttelton, was knock ■ I down by a Christchurch train last nighl, but was supposed to be suffering merely from shock and bruises, hut lie took a turn for the worse this morning. He was sent to the Christchurch Hospital by train and died soon after admission. A SHAKE. WELLINGTON, April 15. Doctor Adams, Government astronomer, reports the seismograph recorded an earthquake at four o'clock this morning. He is unable to properly examine the record till to-morrow, hut a hasty survey indicates the record is similar to that registered at the time of the big Japanese shake last September.
