Speaking at the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, Air L. M. Isitt, M.P. said (reports an exchange), that he noted that the Government grant towards the funds of the society had not been reinstated, but, in view of recent remarks by the Prime .Minister, he thought there would be little difficulty in getting that clone. Regarding the question of punishing husbands who deserted their wives and families, it would pay the Government to spend £IOOO in bringing a deserting husband back from Australia and making him do his duty. Air Isitt approved of the demand for legislation giving parents control of their daughters up to the age of 17, even though they were earning their living. On a recent Sunday afternoon a minister was addressing his country flock at which a number of young folk were in attendance. Speaking on the Cross as a symbol of Christianity he asked the children to say wliieh was distinguished by a cross. One young hopeful essayed a “court house,” while another said, “A place where they liang people !” Further questioning •was abandoned (says the ‘Mannwatn Herald”),
