ARRESTS IN GREECE.
(Received this day at 8 a.m.) ATHENS, April 12.
Owing to indications that reactionary trouble is brewing, the Government has ordered the arrest of eighteen superior military and naval retired officers, including General Leonardopo Alos, Leado’r of the last counter revolution who was sentenced to death, but recently pardoned. General Constantinopuios, the fanatical Royalist Minister for the Interior, announces that considerable quantities of revolvers and cartridges were confiscated.
Tne leaders of the projected movement obviously intended the outbreak to take place after the plebiscite. Matepns who was arrested met the I’reinier, N. I’apanastadiou last evening and protested against the arrests. The Premier replied the Government was determined to crush any attempt at disorders.
SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT FOR DENMARK.
COPENHAGEN. April 13
The elections resulted in the defeat of the Liberal-Conservative Government which lost six seats, thus giving the combination of Social Democrats and Radicals a majority of three. It is expected a Socialist Government will be formed.
SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS CAPETOWN. April 13
The real election light starts after Easter. Meanwhile members and candidates are hurrying to their constituencies. Mr Cre.sswell leads Labour on the Rand and Mr Boydell in Natal. Important meetings of executives of the South African Party decided to op. pose all Independents and to fight every sent. The proceedings were in private but it is understood Mr Smuts made a stirring speech in Capetown. He is iu his best fighting form and rallied the party emphasising that the choice of electors lies between a pact based on dissent and negation and a sane Government. which lias altogether secured the finances of the Union', and attained the most stable conditions.
Prominent legislators not seeking reelection are Murray. Bissett, Buchanan, Saunders, Greenacre. and Mackenrtan while Merrinmn is also practically certain not to stand. There will also be a considerable reshuffling of seats. Cres. well has returned to .Johannesburg, Reitz and one or two other Ministers are going to different provinces. There will lie half a dozen Communist candidates on the Kami and in Durban.
