Magistrate Levey dismissed an information laid by the Cook County Council against tlie Alotor Service Companies lor failure to comply with the County bye-law,s requiring them to re-register if plying for hire over the County roads. Hio Magistrate held the bye-law was unreasonable. He also expressed the opinion that service cars picking up passengers on the roads were not plying for hire.

ESTIAIATE OF DAMAGE. TAUALVRANUI, April 8. It is possible now to give some estimate of the damage done by flood. Ihe farmers on the low-lymg ground near Hakahi suffered heavily. Tu one case a cottage was washed away and in another the house had to he abandoned owing to landslides. v Small bridges were all swept away in tin Kakalii district, and tlie Egmont Box Coy. lost their bridge. Quo farmer estimates his losses at five hundred sterling. Others lost just as heavily. The Taumaranui water supply was cut off for two days, and the electric current was erratic until yesterday afternoon owing to damage to the
transmission poles. Householders suffered considerably in tlie low lying areas of Tauinarunui and those whose houses were invaded by the water estimate damage in each case at £SO. The salevards were also damaged to the extent of £-300. The total rainfall during tho flood was nearly seven inches. ,
