The death of Mr James Hughes, of Lower Broadway, Beefton, occurred oil Thursday evening after a short illness. Regulations were issued in last week’s Gazette, with regard to the taking and sale of quinnat salmon. The close season is set. down for the period May 15th to September 30th. Anglers may dispose of salmon by sale from the present date until May loth. Duly licensed sea fishermen may fish tor and take salmon from the sea outside a radius of 500 yards from the mouth or entrance of any river and dispose of the same by sale, provided that the restriction as to radius shall not apply to tidal rivers or estuaries where netting is allowed for indigenous market iislies. Salmon anglers are requited to furnish a return of catches to the secret arv of the Marine Board.

Gala Day'on Cass Square on Wednesday in aid of the Beautifying Society is going to be a great success judging by the many promises of support and the interest being generally shown in the movement to raise funds. The Municipal Band will be in attendance. a capital programme of cycling events lias lieen arranged, and other sports will fill in the afternoon brightly. There will be a large produce stall which will surprise, visitors by the size of its stock, a very line collection having been obtained. Ibe afternoon tea stall will be another feature. A New Zealand White Cross League is being organised throughout the Domiuioii. Its objects are: (.1.) To promote purity among men and boys; (2) to promote a chivalrous respect for women; (3) to preserve the young irom contamination; (4) to foster a higher tone of public opinion ; (5) to promote a good type of sex education. Already committees have been formed in .Snutumnd, Otago, Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and Auckland. Additional committees have been set up in limaru, Oamaru, and Hamilton. In Auckland, Dr W. Pettit is chairman, the Mayor of Auckland is one of the vice-presi-dents, and the Principal of the Hoys’ Grammar School and the Bishop ot Auckland are members of the committee. The British .Medical Association has given its approval to the White Cross work. The whole New Zealand organisation will be separate from the Waite Cross League in Australia, and in England, although the utmost goodwill is being shown by them towards the work that is being clone in New Zealand.
