J A PAN ES FI STEAMER. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON. April 24. The Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department lias received the following report from the Superintendent of the Radio Station at Wellington in regard to distress signals picked tip at that station this morning:— 2.2 a. lll. —The master of the s.s. Honolulu Mam lias advised Sydney Radio that he was in dangerous position, his ship having lueelod too much, and lie gave his position as longitude 151. 20 degrees east, latitude 30 degrees south. *2.13 a.m.—S.O.S.” call lias been repeated by the s.*s. Honolulu Mam. 2.44 a. lll. s.s. Canlierra has advised the Honolulu Mam that he was proceeding towards him, giving Ids position as 35, 14 south latitude. 150 to 50 degrees east longitude. 3.12 a.in.—The Honolulu Mam has advised Sydney Radio that his position is ve-y dangerous, and that ho has heeled to port 30 degrees. He is trying to even her up !>,v shifting the cargo. 3.41 a.m.—H.M.S. Dauntless has advised the Honolulu Mam that his position was 38.7 S. latitude and 140 57 degrees E longitude, and that he was proceeding towards the distressed ship at twenty knots per hour. 5.25 a.m.—s.s. Canberra lias advised the Dauntless that, as lie is unable to make any headway against the heavy seas, he is returning to Sydney. 1.05 a.m.—The Dauntless has advised the Honolulu Mam that his position was 37.22 degrees S. and 150.3.4 degrees E. and that lie was proceeding at 23 knots.
The signals faded out with the daylight. At 0.50 a.m. the Superintendent of the Radio at Auckland reports that the Dauntless was expected to arrive oil the scene at 7.30 a.m. HELP REACHES VESSEL. SYDNEY, April 4. The cruiser Dauntless, of the Special Sendee Squadron, when oil her way to Sydney, for docking, received the Honolulu Mam's distress signal call aiul proceeded to her assistance. She is now standing by The latest wireless messages state the vessel is still alloat. A.tug lias loth Sydney to rentier assistance. CYCLONIC GALE. SPDNEY. April 4. The gale which struck the Honolulu Ma ru was of cyclonic force. It shifted such cargo as she carried and threw her practically on her beam ends. She rolled so heavily it was thought she would have to he abandoned, hut with other vessels standing by the jmsition improved. A second tug was sent to her assistance in the afternoon. The Honolulu Mam’s tonnage is 3541. She took a quantity of general cargo aboard at Melbourne and 14.000 tons of zinc at Hobart.
A storm along the coast, especially southward of Sydney continues. Heavy rain and a stiff blow continues, with rough, dirty weather along the coast.
Arriving vessels report heavy seas and coasters are sheltering. A warning has been issued of stormy conditions in the Tasman Sea.
OFF U.S.A. COAST. SYDNEY. April 4. The Honolulu Mam wan in light trim. She struck a stiff gale. with blinding rain, and developed a list of 38 degrees. She carries a crew of 65 Japanese. When t ;ho sent out a call for help, she was seventy miles from the coast off the Boga River. The latest report indicates tlu* vessel is slowly making for Sydney in company with tho Dauntless. JAP STEAMER'S SLOW PROGRESS.
.Received this day at a.in.) SYDNEY. April 4. A wireless late to-night reports the warship Dragon has relieved the Dauntless as a convoy for the Honolulu Maru. The Dauntless is coining on to Sydney. The Honolulu .Marti is making slow headway, her speed being I .-"> miles fiourl.v westerly through a heavy confused sea. Tim Dragon is keeping within visibility. The list is no worse. The tugs should reach the Honolulu Maru some time to-morrow. The; weather lias slightly improved. The opinion here is the list lias reached Its maximum and unless Luc weatbei becomes worse, the Honolulu Maru will come through safely. dragon still standing by SYDNEY, April 5. The latest advices show that the Dra- „„„ is still standing by the Honolulu Maru and will take her in tow as soon as the weather permits.
