The Tourist resorts of the Westland district should have more attention now that a resident officer of the Department is on tho Coast. So far, however, wo have not heard ol the resident officer visiting this portion of the district, and meeting the local bodies to ascertain possible requirements or seeking for co-operative help. A good deal could be done in both directions were a move made with tbta object. The district is lamentably neglected so far as the Department is concerned—not to say ignored. During the Xmas holiday period folk arrived hero practically against the advice of tourist officers in the centres, who could not afford any information as to resorts and were in doubt about fares and accommodation! That is rather a serious condition of affairs, but it emphasises the fact as to the neglect of the district complained of. Some pamphlet matter is to be distributee shortly, it is understood from the Coast office, and this portion of the district should know at least what measure c-‘ publicity it is receiving in the booklet.

Generally, a good deal might- be done at this stage to further advertise Westland. This is necessary and timely now to follow up the Exhibition period when much valuable publicity accrued to tho district-. If the advertising has the Government- impress it will natur all carry more weight with the average tourist', who repairs in the first instance as a rule to the nearest tourist bureau for available information. There is thus ' the opening for co-operative kelp with the Department in speeding

abroad particulars of the natural features, and how they may bo reached and seen. The long stream of tourist traffic which has passed south this season. should give a great fillip to future traffic affecting that locality, and any publicity taken in hand should contain special reference to the southern area. It would be wise to advertise Westland prominently at the British Empire Exhibition for many will be visiting that big Show on a world trur, and will include New Zealand, ana Westland should be brought into the probable it inerary.
