A series of articles on Irrigation and its I’ractic-e is commenced in the current March issue of the New Zealand Journal of Agriculture, Alessrs R. t>. Tension.t, Instructor in Agriculture, and J. R. Alarks, Resident Engineer of the Public Works Department at Alexandra, collaborating in the authorship. Part 1 deals with the Centra! Otago region, and irrigation schemes, which are well shown in a special map. A number of illustrations add interest to the article. Subsequent parts will treat of different methods of irrigation and the growing of irrigated crops, with special reference to Central Otago conditions. A contribution which will attract attention among stockmen _ is that by .1. G. Cook dealing with the introduction of sheep into New Zealand, the first entry of each twentyfive breeds being 'tccorded. The compilation is the result-of considerable research and makes a record of historical value. The series 011 tho relation of birds to agriculture (.1. G. Alyer and E. Atkinson) is continued—ihe native pigeon, the kiwis, rails, and shore-birds being discussed informatively. The lucerne-seed crop is a .seasonable subject dealt with by J. AI. Smith. A further article on eider-mak-ing (J. C. Woodin') is also timely. 15. C. Aston writes on strychnine and its poisonous action, with instructions lor troatmet in case of accidental poisoning of human beings and domestic animals. Control of flic mealy-bug pest in orchards by means of an introduced lad.-bird is described by D. ATil'er in one of his interesting illustrated entomological notes. Other articles are those on root-development of lucerne (B. AI. Davis). Acidity reduction in cream and grading of New Zealand honey for export. Among sundry matter (in addition to the regular monthly features) is a report by R. AlcGillivrny on the International Cattle-breed-ing Congress held at the Hague last year; and a full list of meat-freezing works in New Zealand, brought up to date.
