DEFENCE EXPENDITURE

WELLINGTON, March' 27.
Reference .was made by the Prime Minister to a cablegram reporting that Air Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer, had stated that the estimated defence expenditure of various parts of the Empire for 1923-24 included £677,000 in New Zealand. The Prime Alinistcr stated that the actual estimated defence expenditure for 1923-24 was as under: £. Consolidated Fund vote .. 376,354 Naval defence 339,397 H.AI.S. New Zealand Funded debt- amortisation 10,249 Interest 47,539 Interest 4 per cent Consolidated stock 18,671 Interest 3], per cent Consolidated stock 12,781 Public Works Fund vote, contingent defence ... 25,500 Singapore base (Sec. 13 Finance Act, 1923) ... 100,000 Total £930,494 “The Chancellor of the Exchequer’s figures,” said Air Alassey, “appear to lie arrived at by taking as tho totai estimated expenditure oiiilv the two votes in tho main Estimates, naval and defence, £677,000, without regard to supplementary Estimates, other votes or appropriations *“ shown above.”
