HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, MARCH 28th. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), C'oulson, King, Evans, Jeffries, Pcrham, Mackay, Lloyil and Heinz. The minutes were confirmed and outwa'd correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

From Dunedin R.S.A., inquiring as to any vacancies for a monumental mason.—Received; reply approved. From Wirtlis Bros., applying for a refund of deposit left to cover any damage done to Cass Square on their recent visit. - Received. It was stated that the full amount of the deposit had been expended on renovating the ground. A reply to he sent to this effect.

From J. Park, in reference to solicitors fees, which had been collected by the Town Clerk from the Magistrate s Court, and asking that they he left for him to collect in future. —Recoiled; referred to Town Clerk. From T. Brown, declining to take up contract for S"le Street drain.—Received. The Town Clerk stated that the next tender of Walsh and party had been accepted. The action taken was approved. From J. Breeze applying for water connection to section North Resell Street.—Received; and request granted on tlie usual conditions.

Front Westland Sub-Union applying for use of Cass Square for the football season on the usual terms; also asking that- the placing ground receive necessary attention.—Received ; referred to Reserves Committee with power to act up to £5. Mr Evans stated that the mower was going on the Square next day and that lie did not think any large expenditure was involved. The request for use of the square was granted subject to payment of 10°, of gate money, anil subject to the rights of other sports clubs. From Municipal Band applying for an expression of opinion of the ( oun- < il to a desire to run a series of Sunday evening sacred concerts in Princess Theatre, and asking for permission for same.—Received; Mr Evans moved that the request he granted, subject to the proceeds being devoted to an approved object, and does not interfere with the church services. Mr C'oulson seconded, stating lie understood there would ho no charge and no collection, 'i ici motion was agreed to. From Department of Public Health re a number of requisitions to he served and lor the results of same; also forwarding others for service.—Received : Town Clerk to reply. SOUTH HOKITIKA. From Valuer-General Wellington as .follows: Referring to your memorandum ol the 17th. instant herein I give below the other conditions of the Commission's recommendations on this matter. 1. That the boundaries of West I and County and Hokitika Borough bo altered so as to exclude the area ol; Hokitika South from tlie Hokitika Borough and to include it in the Westland Coun-

That it he a condition precedent to such alteration of boundaries that a revaluation of the area ol Hokitika South lie made by the 5 ablation Department at the cost of the Hokitika Borough Council. 3. That immediately on the alteration of boundaries taking eliect the Hokitika Borough Council pay to the West-, land County Council the sum of £350 to enable the latter body to put the roads and bridges in .Hokitika- South into a reasonable state of repair. • L That each party pay its own costs; and that the costs of the. Commission he paid in equal parts by the Hokitika Borough Council and the 'Westland County Council. —Received and consideration deterred on the motion of tho Mayor and Mr King, the Mayor remarking that the proposal appeared to he shelved.

REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £877 15s 2d; payments £502 2s 8d; credit balance of £2 Is Gd. Loan a'e credit £B4l 5s lid.—Received. Accounts amounting to £SOO 13s lOd were passed for naynient. RESERVES COMM ITTEK. The Reserves Committee reported : (1) approving of the draft lease submitted by the Borough Solicitor for the renewal of the Municipal Endowment Leases at Koiterangi; (2) that in view of the increasing deficit on the Cemetery account, the Westland County Council pursuant to the provision of the Cemeteries Act he asked to contribute £25 per annum toward the maintenance charges and general upkeep of the Cemetery grounds.—Received and adopted. ORDER RARER. Mr Evans moved:—“That commencing with the coming financial year (April Ist., 1024) the Treasurer keep a journalised account of fa) General expenditure; (h) Loan expenditure on the respective streets of the Borough, and at the close of each financial period the information to he tubulated and published in llie annual statement of accounts for the general

information of the ratepayers.” Seconded by Mr i’eiham and carried. Mr Jell lies asked when the town was going to get an improved lighting m the streets. He would like to be enlightened on the losition. At present the lig.-t was a distinct scandal, and it it could not lie improved they should go back to gas.

'I lie Mayor said the Council contracted with the WooLston Tanneries Ltd., tor the supply ot electric power for street lighting purposes, but there was no standard of light contracted for. He suggested that .Mr Jeffries move a diiect motion drawing attention to the poor finality of the light. Mr Jeffries said he thought the inefficiency of til light at present supplied should be drawn under the attention of those responsible. Mr Evans said for some time the light had been had especially on one or two Saturday nights, and the light was becoming something of a joke among visitors. He moved that the Company he written to asking that the conditions he looked to and that an endeavour be made to have an improvement effected, lie recognised the good work done while the Exhibition was on, when they ran their auxiliary plant. Mr Coiil.son set ended the motion, and stated the conditions of the contract were governed by the I‘uhlic Works regulations. The motion was agreed to.

Mr Evans asked when the repairs to the Library roof were to he carried. The Mayor said this would bo put in hand at once.

Mr Heinz referred to the water supply, stating the water in the reservoir was down to 4 feet. Attention was required to a number of places where water was wasted. Also that attention be given to the pipe line on Tucker Flat, which was in urgent need of of attention. It was resolved that the Public Works Committee lie authorised to obtain a sufficient number of clamps and pipes that w ere required. It was resolved to procure a number of suitable water pipes for connections. The Council rose at 8.10 p.m.
