Smith stood revealed as a collector of graft from whisky deals, lie died when the trial of the great bootleg ring of New York was pending. He left his gains to Dougherty. Oliver demanded that -Mr Coolidgo require Dougherty to furnish accountants with a statement of Smith’s estate.
THE SOVIET AND CANADA. (Received this day at 10.45 n.m.) OTTAWA, March 20. Mr MsieKenzio King has informed Yasikoff, head of the Soviet Agency in Montreal, that Canada was prepared to recognise Russia. Yasikoff, following on conversations with Mr Mackenzie King last week, wrote to the I’rinie Minister asking whether British recognition also comprehends. Canadian de jure recognition in order to assure a more definite basis to trade between the two countries. Mr King’s reply stresses Canada’s readiness to grant recognition on the grounds that it was in tbc best interests of both countries.
