Tin-: British cruiser squadron will ho visiting the nonunion in n few weeks’ tittle now. At the several ports to he visited, ananoetnenls .are being made for the school children of the respective provinces to visit the centres and inspect the units of the British Navy, which patrols the high seas and keeps open the pathways for our couimeree. Bo far we have not heard of any attempt to permit the 'Westland children visiting Lyttelton, and having an opportunity of inspecting the warships. Yet with through railway connection now the way is open for such an excursion to he arranged, and it is hoped the authorities will not lose sight of the possibilities. It would be an education to the rising generation of the Coast and flic excursion might well be arranged. We notice that for the more fortunately-placed children of the larger provinces the Government wifi provide special excursion trains and subsidise £ for £ moneys raised for the catering of visiting children. If there will he this generosity for children close to large centres where warships are no novelty, what can he done for the children more remotely located, who have never had this opportunity of seeing a large ocean boat? The educational value of tile excursion is undeniable niul if the Government, the Canterbury Education Board, and the Navy League and load bodies put their heads together, study an excursion at least for the senior scholars of the Westland primary schools could Ik? arranged, and carried through very successfully. The time is not far distant when the warships will bo moored in Lyttelton harbour and as there are many preliminaries to be disposed of, the matter should be taken up without delay.
