SINGAPORE BASE.
LORD SYDENHAM’S PLEA. ['‘Tub Times” Skrviob.] (Received this day al 9.15 a.m.) LONDON. March 21. In a letter to the “Times,” Lord Sydenham, after emphasising how strategically important Singapore is, declares the Government, by a decision depriving the navy of the means of acting effectively in the Pacific for the protection of Australia, New Zealand, the Malay Straits and even India in addition to the vast volume of food supplied over other trade routes, have thus determined to pare the right arm of the Empire of all defence in those waters which may become vital in legat'd to our territorial integrity and commerce. The Government have violated a solemn undertaking given by their predecessors to the great dominions who have hitherto trusted to the sure shield of the navy. The effect is a heavy blow to tbe Empire, inspired by tho illusive theories which are contradicted by all the world’s history. As Mr Bruce plainly stated, the Government have manifested a distinct lack of Empire vision, which is dangerous in the circumstances.
