NEWS AND NOTES.
A visitor at the Palmerston North Lunch Club said: “Tlie whole community, men, women, and children, is being educated in the habit of spending, which, if directed into the main channel, is a good thing. Unfortunately, they must first learn by bitter results that to dissipate their earnings in all the little streams of pleasure, means that they must some day remain in want of those substantial things that make life worth while. They should foster the savings bank habit.”—“Manawatu Times.”
The attitude of a witness, with long hush experience, who was called to give evidence as to the value ol timber on a property at Oropi, occasioned some little humour in the Auckland Supreme Court (reports the “Herald”). Counsel for defence was cross-examin-ing, and the witness while not controverting the statements ■of other exports, stoutly maintained his own views. “I am only a working man” ho said, “and 1 came to give my opinion, not to be bullied.” “Aon arc quite safe here, at any rate,” said Air Justice Iferdman. and counsel for the other .side told witness he was quite holding his own.
An important subject brought before the Maori Land Board at Gisborne was an application by various bodies of incorporated owners of Native land for a recommendation that they lie permitted to borrow money for the purpose of investing it in the dairy industry. It appears (says an exchange) that there is a desire on the part of the Waiapu Natives to start the .dairy industry among them. A sum of about CIO,OOO is to he raised, which is to ho utilised in securing up-to-date buildings and plant, which it is intended shall be a co-operative concern under the control of the .Maori suppliers. The board resolved to issue the necessary recommendation in each case, at the same time pointing out certain steps which should be, taken to guard the interests of the owners.
