The friends of the Returned Soldiers Association are invited to meet at the Soldiers’ Hall at 7.30 o’clock to-morrow night to make arrangements for a monster "bazaar to he held the first week in July in aid of the Club room building fund. There should be a large and enthusiastic attendance of Indies and gentlemen. The wrestling match between Willie Martin (Rapahoei and Bob Steel (Runauga), resulted in a victory for the former, gaining three falls out of five. It is stated that Steel would have been a much harder opponent had he not overtrained, although Martin gave a really scientific exhibition. The Runanga Cycle Race was held yesterday from Runanga Post Office of the Seven Mile Hotel and back twice. The following was the result: J. Griffin, lmin .'Msecs, 1; Twohill, 2mins, 2; 11. Woods, 2mins, 3. The placed men were close together at the finish when Griffin managed to sprint ahead. Turtill and Wilson put up the fastest time 31mins lOsees.
There was an error in a paragraph in a recent issue, referring to bank holidays. The batiks will not have holidays from April 18th to 22ml inclusive. Owing to there being two other statutory holidays, on April 23rd and 25th, the hanks have decided that all offices in New Zealand should he opened on Tuesday, April 22ud, although the Tuesday after Easter is usually declared a special holiday.
Mild excitement prevailed for a brief period on the steamer Pinko at Wellington early on Friday evening, when Detective Tricklebank proceeded to question a man who was walking along an alleyway with a sack on his hack. The man, however, acted promptly and bolted, but by running down the opposite alleyway the detective was able to intercept him. The bag was missing, lint a search in a nearby lavatory brought it to light. It is said to have contained a quantity of bloaters which previously had had more than a passing acquaintance with the ship’s stores. The suspected thief was taken in charge.
The sequel to the disappearance of a valuable five-seater motor-car from a Gkuznee Street garage on Thursday, says a Wellington correspondent, was recorded at New Plymouth the next afternoon, when the police there arrested three young men, Gordon William Johnston, George Ryan and Charles Johnston, who are alleged to have been found in possession of the machine. They will appear before the Court at New Plymouth and lie remanded to appear at Wellington. It is not known whether the 800 worth of samples, which were in the car at the time it disappeared, have heel) recovered.
Rather a remarkable performance was registered at the Swimming Bath yesterday morning when Miss Lucille Payne and Miss Alva- Mclntosh essayed to break the long distance record swim held by three schoolboys, of 2.'. miles. The two gilds started off together, hut at tlm completion of 175 lengths Miss Payne had to retire owing to cramp. Miss Mclntosh, swimming strongly kept, on and finished gamely after swimming 2M lengths of the hath a distance of ;t miles 70yds., which she accomplished in 3 hours. Considering that Miss Alva, is only 12 years of age, the feat is certainlv worthy of recognition.
Jlon. J. Grimmond, Member of the Westland County Council lias given notice of motion as follows lor next County Council meeting:—“That urgent representations he made to the Post-master-General pointing out the necessity for a twice weekly mail service to Waiho Gorge. Note: At. present a twelve weekly mail service is provided as far as Hari •tlari, hut alter April will be discontinud to Waiho. The lapidlv increasing business between Hokitika and Waiho justifies the additional servee during the winter months to Waiho Gorge which is becoming a popular winter resort.”
It seems as ii' tlio tar-sealing of the roadway and other improvements being elfeeted on Cass and Maoandiew Squares is being appreciated bv tile citizens. Mr Isaac Brown, of Retell Street, who made a special donation, of £1 Is. last week towards the cost of the tar-sealing of the roadway on Cass Square after visiting the grounds and viewing the work has notified the Beautifying Society Unit he would donate £2 2s fowaids the cost of tar-sealing kite roadway on Cass Square instead of £1 Is-, previously promised. As the funds of the Society are exhausted, Air Brown's thoughtful help will be appreciated.
