A meeting of Indies and gentlemen willing to co-operate in holding n monster bazaar and novelty entertainment in aid of the building fund for the R.S.A. Cluh will he held at 0,,. Boring operations for gold and to ascertain the depth of the alluvial, will be undertaken very shortly in the Donogluios district adjacent to Boss. The prospecting is being undertaken with a view ultimately to dredging the fiat, where in former years at the time of the dredging boom, a certain! amount of successful dredging was carried on. If the present proposals take shape, the dredging will be on a large scale utilising an electric dredge of considerable power and depth. The result of the prospecting will he awaited with interest.

An outbreak of tire occurred in the State School, Waiuta, at 1.30 a.in. yesterday. Luckily, it was noticed by Mr Stewart and a friend, who gave the alarm, and the fire was quickly extinguished. The damage is confined to the flooring and joists around the fireplace. Had the fire gone unnoticed a few minutes longer, the building would have been completely destroyed.

Green, New Zealand nurserymen's organising secretary, was in Ashburton recently his attention was drawn to diseased potatoes, which, though apparently social when dug lotted in the sack in a few days, "ith a particularly strong smell. Samples were later sent to iho Government s Biological 'Laboratory at "Wellington where examination disclosed the fact that the potatoes are infected by bacillus sohunicoarum, commonly known as mattery eye, wet rot, or haetcriosis. This disease is widespread throughout the Dominion, being especially prevalent at Pukekohe, where on occasions it causes serious loss. '1 he disease is introduced into clean land by planting infected seed tubers, and after a. diseased crop the organism may survive for several yea“s in the soil. It may he prevented by using clean ground and planting only seed tubers known to he free from infection, and also by ;l . long crop rotation of land that lias become infected.
