AUSTRALIAN AND N Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION JAP SUBMARINE SINKS. TOKYO, March 19. Submarine 43 with a crew of four officers and forty men suddenly sank, one hundred miles outside of the harbour of Sasebo while undergoing a speed trial, as the result of a collision with tlie warship Latsula. RUSSIA AND JAPAN. TOKIO, March 19. It is reported from Vladivostock tha Japan and Russia have reached au agreement, in regard to Hie fisheries dispute. Other matters where di 11; eulties exist are being gradually straightened out. JAP AIRSHIP DESTROYED. TOKIO, March 19. Another disaster has befallen the Navy dirigible of the S.S. type, imported from England three or four years ago. It suddenly caught fire and fell into the forest of the Igarak Prefecture, due to the explosion. The crew of live, were all killed. Tlie bodies were recovered. The dirigible was fifty-one metres long. JAP SUBMARINE DISASTER. TOKIO, March 19. Regarding the disaster to Submarine •13, the Navy Office during subsequentattempts at rescue stated there was little hope of finding survivors. This marks the loss of the second submarine since last. August, when one sank off Kobe. Naval circles wore further depressed when half an hour later the submarine sank they wore informed the naval dirigible caught fire while aloft and fell in lharaki Prefecture, north-east of Tokio, killing its crew of five. The comniander’s was the only body found. The remainder probably leaped from tlie blazing airship before it plunged into the forest. THE BURNEY AIR SCHEME LONDON. .March 19. In the Commons, answering questions. Mr MacDonald said that the statements in the press that the Government had definitely abandoned the Burney airship scheme were baseless. Tlie scheme at present was being thoroughly examined.
Asked if he would expedite the decision of the Committee, Mr MacDonald replied the Government refused the responsibility for schemes of such enormous magnitude without a thoroughly sound examination of the details. THE MODERN GIRL. A SCATHING INDICTMENT. LONDON. March 19. Lady Francis Balfour made the most scathing indictment ever launched against the modern girl in the course of a debate with Miss Yiola Tree, the actress. She said:—-“We see the young women of to-day doing everything they possibly can to imitate a courtesan. Her face was a mass oi powder and her lips were daubed out of all human resemblance. The stinking rock of her makes me long to breathe God’s sweet air.’’ Lady Balfour added:— 1 1 overheard two society woman greeting one another in Bond Street: Let us go to Stewarts and have a really bilious lunch. MHs Tree replied: —“Everything is so free and open and there is no ineen live. to do wrong. Why should wo ask our ankles to he praised when wo show practically the whole leg; or why drink cocktails when they flow like water.” Miss Tree insisted that modern girls were utterly natural.
