EMPIRE EXHIBITION.
questions in commons. JUSTIIALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. I Received this day a! 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, Alarch 19. in the Commons Air Ben Tillett demanded, regarding the Empire Exhibition. that the Government lay outlie table their schemes for organisation, control, maintenance, payments, authority and responsibility. He declared the House ought not to venture another cent until a guarantee of something like collective business management was forthcoming. Ho also complained of the absence of a real effort to deal with accommodation.
All- J. H. Thomas (Colonial Secretary) did not attempt to justify tho blunders of the early stages. He had visited the exhibition recently with representatives of tile whole of tlie Dominions, but while the latter complained in the old days they wore now united in saying that tilings were now going smoothly as regards accommodation. Ho gave an assurance that the Government was doing its duty in attending to t]*.e protection and help of citizens like the coloured races. Tic was also seeing that the large numbers of Overseas children who were coming for educational purposes were properly housed and treated. Large numbers of men and women of different committees wore organising schemes and plans to deal with tho situation generally.
The question of opening the grounds of tho Exhibition on Sundays which was tho subject of many deputations to the Government, was raised in tlio Commons by Air Patrick Hastings, who staed that under a certain Act of 1671, Sunday opening was illegal if a charge was made for admission'.
