GOVERNOR-GENERAL
HIS TERM OF OFFICE. AUCKLAND, March 14 It now appears that the GovernorGeneral has been unable to accede to the New Zealand Government’s pressing request to accept an extension of his term of office, which nominally expires in September next. About a month ago it was reported that their Excellencies intended to leave for England before the end of the year. Jt, was then slated that (lie reason for this very unwelcome intention was concerned with the completion of their children’s education in England. As a matter of fact, a definite request to Lord Jellieoo to remain longer in New Zealand was made a few weeks ago by the Prime .Minister when in Auckland. On that occasion it is understood, it was suggested that Lord .rdlieoe might favourably consider the possibility of remaining in office for at least another year. The request war. to he given very careful consideration.
Apparently his Excellency Ims not seen his way clear to agree to an extension of bis term, oven though, as he declared himself at Greymouth the oilier day a further term would he
acceptable. It was there mentioned by Lord Jellieoe that “unfortunately circumstances over which he had no control forbade his acceptance.” Such a statement, at least, suggests finality. Tt also raised the inevitable notion of his successor.
LORD JELLTCOE. WELLINGTON. March 15. Lord Jellieoe’s term as GoveriiArGeneral of the Dominion will expire in September next. In this connection Mr Massey stated to-day that, on behalf of the Government he had asked His Excellency to stay in New Zealand for another year, but Lord Jellieoe had replied that, much as ho would like to stay, from certain points of view, ho felt it unfair to the members of his family to do so.
