A correspondent writes—On Friday evening it function was held lor tho purpose ot giving a send-off to Air I . .McCann, of the Railway Department. A good muster of men connected with railway affairs was present. Mr Bert Robinson had the chair. Items were given by Messrs Murphy, Essen and various others. .Mr J. Murphy presented a gold watch to Mr McCann ami hoped he would live a long time to wear it. Other speakers eulogised the good work carried on hy the guest of the evening, and all unanimously agreed that lie "'as O.K. as a foreman and organiser in tiie work carried on around llokitika. Every best wish on his promotion to Wellington was endorsed very heartilv be all present.- Mr McCann responded in a neat speech in which he said, when lie got men to work and do their duty as lie had experienced in Hokitika there was no trouble as the men "'ere willing and did in they were told. Proceedings were brought to a close with the singing of Old Lang Syne. Grand opening display of new season’s goods at McKay’s.
