THE BRITISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.

MEDICAL CONGRESS. AUCKLAND, March 5. At the Medical Conference, Dr. Franklin Marton, of the American College of Surgeons, spoke of the organisation of that Institution which, he said, was responsible for the new hospital movement in the United States. It had been very difficult work at first and it was strongly opposed, but resulted in far greater efficiency in surg. i v generally and in tho administration of hospitals. Both in Canada and the United States a. very high standard had been set up and insisted upon for admission to membership of tho College of surgeons. The hospitals were now efficiently supervised and charts were taken at all the hospitals. This had led to a remarkable increase in efficiency in America. Rich men and middle class men could be accommodated and given the same treatment at the hospitals as a poor man, but surgeons were justifiably entitled to charge tho well-to-do people for services rendered. Tie condemned, generally, the treat!ment of well-to-do patrons at hospitals at nominal fees. Dr. Mayo spoke on similar lines. I’rofessor Barnett, of Dunedin, said h_> had prepared a scheme somewhat oti the American lines for operation in this country. If this could not he done within the 8.M.A.. it should be done without it. hut- it was turned down by the B.M.A.
