Research work and developments in connection with agriculture and rural industries in England and Wales are dealt with in the thirteenth report of the Development. Commissioners for the ye-ai ended March 31st. last. The advances from the funds administered by the Commissioners amounted to £511,577, as compared with £368,450 in the previous year, while the expenses of administration totalled £11,607. The sum of £-511,577 included approximate-
!v £221,000 from a special grant ol £850,000 which under the Corn Production Acts (Repeal) Act 1021, "as paid into the Development l'lind for agricultural development by way of compensation to the agricultural community for the discontinuance of the •ruaiantee for corn growing, the chief objects to which the advances from the special fund had been allocated were:
—Additions to the lands and improvement:' to the buildings at research institutes and agricultural colleges; i he extension of the advisory scheme in connection with agricultural research b\ the provision of additional local advisory officers; the increase of help to local authorities for agricultural education; the provision of scholarships for children of agricultural workers; the endowment of a chair in animal pathology at Cambridge; and a scheme foi ; lie development of the poultry and livestock industry. In support of the work of the Commission in connection with agriculture and rural industries grants are made for the maintenance of a number of institutions for carrying out sciontfie investigation, and a consultative staff of scientific men for advising farmers in their technical difficulties is maintained; while special research grants are made for limited periods t.i individual research workers lor the pm pose of providing, them with skiliec assistance, or with the equipment neves(•ary for their work.
